UK marine conservationists have appealed to divers and other sea users to report encounters of marine wildlife.

UK marine conservationists have appealed to divers and other sea users to report encounters of
marine wildlife to help establish a report on how the environment has changed. The Wildlife Trusts has launched the national campaign to highlight the massive loss of marine mega-fauna in UK seas, including dolphins, whales and sharks. The launch in spring was timed to coincide with the peak of basking shark sightings around the southwest coast.
The charity's campaign leaflet, Seas of Plenty, sets out to show how much the UK marine environment has changed in a short period of time. It is hoped the campaign will put extra pressure on the government for the creation of a Marine Bill that includes marine reserves.
Callum Roberts, professor of marine conservation at York University, teamed up with The Wildlife Trusts to produce the Seas of Plenty campaign leaflet.
He said: 'Today, we tend not to think of the UK as a place that could ever boast a profusion of giant fish and marine mammals, but even as little as a century ago it was very different. The seas around our islands were home to remarkable marine megafauna. Their extinction is happening in front of our eyes and only today's generations can prevent it.'
